WHAT IS OSTEOARTHRITIS ?

Osteoarthritis, in India commonly known as “Sandhi vaat”, it is a condition in which the natural cushioning (Called Gaadi) in between two bones where a joint is formed. This cushion is called Cartilage. This cushion or Cartilage when damaged or wears off, the bones of the joints rub against each other and cause severe pain in the joint on movements of the joint. This results in swelling of the joint, stiffness, limited movements of the joint and sometimes, the formation of particles of the bone deposited around the joint bones which is called spur or osteophytes which further causes pain during the joint movements.

 

ARTHRITIS TYPE:

The most common types of arthritis are :

Osteoarthritis:

The cartilage between the two long bones of leg and thigh gets worn out

as a result rubbing of your thigh bone nd Shin bone takes place as a result you get moderate to severe pain on knee movements.

Arthritis due to Injury / Trauma :  

Thinning of cartilage between thigh bone and Shin bone happens due to injury / trauma to the knee due to any reason. when both bones get rubbed on movements, tit causes pain, stiffness, and limitation of movements of the knee joint. The process of knee joint arthritis pain may take a long time to start after the injury / trauma to the joint.

Rheumatoid Arthritis: 

This is also called as Autoimmune disease. When you have a weak immune system in yur body, and any infection due to an injury or any other reason, your weak immune system triggers infection in your joints which will result in inflammation and swelling of the synovial membrane which will also damage the cartilage between the two long bones resulting in pain and swelling of your joint and limitation of joint movements.

Knee joint arthritis is more common in females than males. usually seen in people after the age of 40 years but may also affect younger people also.

Different Causes:

  • Age.
  • An older person has decreased ability of healing a damaged cartilage
  • Weight:
  • Increased pressure on the knee joints due to overweight will result in knee pain.
  • Sex:  Females ages 50 and above have more chances of osteoarthritis than men.
  • Too much stress on knees or Trauma:
  •  Usually people with job of lifting heavy weights, continuous joint movement involvement with stressful or forceful activity of knee joints or trauma will result in knee joint arthritis.
  • Sport Activity: Sports persons  enganged in sports like in soccer / Football, Lawns tennis, or runners may be get knee arthritis.

Diagnosis of Osteoarthritis:

Usually an X-Ray of the knee joint will reveal the changes in the joint. Sometimes an MRI may be ordered if X-Ray doesn’t show the problems.

Treatment of Osteoarthritis: 

Pain killers injections /Tablets are prescribed for mild cases but for severe pain, an intraarticular injections may be advised by orthopedic surgeons and lately Knee joint Replacement surgery is also advised.
